Q.I am using a servo motor, and it outputs an alarm that says overvoltage protection. When does the output occur and how do I deal with it?

A.

The following 3 conditions are required for overvoltage protection to come into effect.

(1) When the power supply voltage is abnormally high

(2) When descending during winding operation or vertical operation

(3) During a deceleration stop with a large load inertia

For (1), it is necessary to check the power supply voltage.

For (2) and (3), this is the load condition under which the motor is forced to rotate by an external force and regeneration operation occurs.

The following is how to deal with this problem.

  • Reduce the operating speed
  • Increase the deceleration time
  • Use a regeneration resistor*
  • *A regeneration resistor is an optional component that absorbs regenerative energy.
If it is not possible to change the operation time or deceleration time, we recommend the use of a regeneration resistor.
For more details about regeneration resistors, refer to the Product Details Information.

Depending on the operation conditions, if you use αSTEP instead of a servo motor, there is almost no need to consider regenerative energy.
