Q.Is there any way to check if the AC motor is broken?

The following 3 methods can be used for a simple check.

[Confirmation Method]

  1. Confirm the winding condition by measuring the motor winding resistance value
  2. Confirm the capacitor capacitance
  3. Check for deterioration of bearings by turning the motor shaft by hand

[Caution]

  • When checking, be sure to shut off the power supply to prevent electric shock and short circuit accidents.
  • If the breaker trips at the same time as the power is turned on, the motor power line may have a ground fault or the motor may have suffered a dielectric breakdown.
    We recommend that you replace the motor and capacitor without turning on the power supply.

Details

  1. Confirm the winding condition by measuring the motor winding resistance value
    Measure the motor winding resistance value using the following table as a reference, and check the windings for open circuits or short circuits.

  2. In case of disconnection
    There is a possibility of wire disconnection if the resistance value of each phase is more than a few kΩ
  3. In case of short circuit
    If the resistance value is less than 1 Ω, there is a possibility of internal short circuit
  4. Confirm the capacitor’s capacitance
    Make sure that the appropriate capacitor for the motor is used.

    • Check the capacitance
      Check that the capacitance (μF) listed on the side of the capacitor and on the motor nameplate are the same.

    • Check the voltage
      Make sure that the voltage (VAC) marked on the side of the capacitor is approximately twice the voltage (V) marked on the motor nameplate.

  5. Check for deterioration of bearings by turning the motor shaft by hand
    With the gearhead removed, turn the motor shaft by hand to make sure it is not locked.
    Because the reversible motor has a friction brake, there will be some contact noise and resistance, but this is not abnormal.
    For electromagnetic brake motors, release the electromagnetic brake before checking.
    Since the gearhead of the right-angle geared type and worm geared type cannot be removed, it cannot be checked by turning the motor shaft by hand. We recommend that you send it in for inspection.
